Salamanca 13.10.10

It’s been a travel day, but it’s been fascinating. We caught the 2.00pm train from Bilbao to Salamanca and travelled through truly breathtaking scenery: the mountains in the Basque area were magnificent, and then the vast open plains made us realise just how big Spain really is. This is an unforgettable train journey and I am so glad we chose to travel this way.

We got in at 7.30 (so yes, it’s five and a half hours on the train) and checked into our hotel (NH Puerta de la Catedral) which is right next to the old cathedral in the old town, cobblestone streets and gorgeous buildings everywhere. It is no exaggeration to say that we were taken aback by the majesty and magnificence of the cathedral. It is a glorious piece of architecture, Gothic and Romanesque, and massive!

It was too late to take pictures, and I suspect that no photo I could take could possibly convey its beauty, (neither does the Wikipedia one above) but click here to get a glimpse of why it is so overwhelming.
